Bemis
Charles M. Bemis was born 31 Dec 1866 and died 21 Jun 1877. He is buried at the Black Walnut Cemetery as documented by Mary Johnson McElhiney in Gone But Not Forgotten. She lists a grave stone with his name and son of M. & B. Bemis.
As best we can establish from census records and death certificates for some of his siblings, we have identified his mother as Ruth McBride Bemis and his father as Martin Bemis. Perhaps the B for his mother was a typo or if the stone was in bad condition the R appeared as a B? During the cemetery restoration of 2020-2021, only the bottom half of the grave stone was located, so our mystery remains to be solved.
Young Charles and his family were located in the 1870 Federal Census and the 1876 MO State Census in St Charles County. It is difficult to pin the family down as they moved from Indiana to Illinois to Iowa to Minnesota and then to Missouri in the space of 15 years. While the family was still living in St. Charles in 1880, they moved on with their remaining children spreading out to other counties in Missouri.
Does anyone know any people named Bemis? Other family names for descendants include: Newcomb (Wright Co, MO), Ford, Bowers (Henry Co, MO), and Johnson.
