Gaiter

Catharine Kisinger Gaiter 27 May 1810 – 27 Dec 1860 and her daughter Sarah 17 Aug 1849 – 20 Mar 1860 are both buried at the Black Walnut Cemetery. Catharine Kisinger’s story starts in Berkeley County, Virginia where she first married John Cunningham and had two children John William and Charity Ann. After her husband died, Catharine married Samuel Gaiter and they had more children, the youngest of whom was Sarah. The 1850 Census shows Samuel and Catherine Gaiter with their family and Catharine’s two older children.

Her son John William Cunningham married Eleanor Spencer who was the granddaughter of George Stovin and Sarah “Sally” O’Connell Spencer who are also buried at Black Walnut Cemetery.

There are some Gaiter family including the Slaters who stayed local and were buried at Fee Fee Cemetery. There is also a related Gaiter family in California.
