Major family
We first find the Major family on the 1870 census – just William and Libbea, perhaps starting their life together as newlyweds. We see three children born in quick succession with Willie born 24 June 1871 who died on 6 Jul 1871, Elmer born 7 April 1872 who died on 2 Sep 1875, and Anna G born 4 Nov 1872 who died 1 Aug 1873 – according to the records at SCCHS Archives and they are listed in Mary John McElhiney’s Gone But Not Forgotten, which also notes they are the children of W & ET. The obelisk was also documented by Lucille Wiechens in 1987, but was not located during the cemetery restoration 2020-2021.
In an effort to locate a Libbea Major, we have added the first name Elizabeth to Libbea’s record on Ancestry to try and find more details on her. William and Libbea have not yet been located on an 1880 census.
There is lots of research needed to determine where they came from, Libbea’s maiden name, BMD records for both of them, and an answer to where William and Libbea moved on to and if they had any more children.
